Hydraulic Institute Guidebook on Mechanical Seals for Pumps

Hydraulic Institute supported by 19 industry experts and in cooperation with the Fluid Sealing Association has compiled the most comprehensive book to date on mechanical seals. It is easy to read and filled with drawings, photographs and reference tables.

Chapter 3, Basic Operation Principles, provides in just seven pages an excellent overview of the essential elements of a mechanical seal—how it functions, how it’s lubricated and how to estimate power consumption of a liquid-lubricated seal.

There are 113 drawings and photographs, many in colour, that illustrate the text. The 28 colour photographs in Chapter 23, Troubleshooting Mechanical Seals, show actual wear. These photos are accompanied by text that explains the probable cause of each type of wear.

There are 16 reference tables. Table 15.6: Material selection guide for mechanical seals is 20 pages long and contains compatibility guidelines for more than 500 products. Chapter 2, Definitions, is a 20 page dictionary of the terms used in reference to mechanical seals and their operating environments. The 56 terms identified in the table in Appendix B are shown with their corresponding symbols and units of measurement inboth metric and U.S. customary units.

Hydraulic Institute Guidebook on Optimizing Pumping Systems

Twenty-two industry experts have compiled a comprehensive book on optimizing pumping systems. Energy losses in the pumping system as a whole are often greater than energy losses in the pumping unit.

Read this book to learn how optimizing both existing and new pumping systems and purchasing based on life cycle costs will lead to increased profitability through a reduction in unnecessary, expensive energy consumption and maintenance costs.

Optimizing Pumping Systems includes: • Executive Summary • Chapter 1 – Pump Fundamentals • Chapter 2 – Pump and System Interaction • Chapter 3 – Calculating Cost of Ownership • Chapter 4 – Improving the Performance of Existing Pumping Systems • Chapter 5 – Building Better Pumping Systems: Optimizing New Designs • Chapter 6 – Pumping System Economics—Opportunities to Improve Life Cycle Performance • 13 page Glossary of Terms • Case Studies

These guidebooks are available from the Europump Secretariat.

Pump Life Cycle Costs Guide

Pump Life Cycle Costs A Guide to LCC Analysis for Pumping Systems

This guide is the result of collaboration between the Hydraulic Institute, Europump and the US Department of Energy’s Office of Industrial Technologies (OIT).

Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis is a management tool that can help companies minimise waste and maximise energy efficiency for many types of systems, including pumping systems. This guide will assist plant owners/operators in applying the LCC methodology to pumping systems.

Variable Speed Pumping Guide

Variable Speed Pumping : A Guide to Successful Applications (written by Europump and the Hydraulic Institute)

Applying speed control can save energy, reduce equipment and maintenance costs, increase reliability and optimise pumping system performance by using the most cost-effective variable speed pump for a given application. The key is to design all elements of the pumping system to function optimally together, for the lowest life cycle cost.

This guide brings together everything you need to know to design, specify and operate successful variable speed pumping systems - all in one amazingly comprehensive volume. It shows you, step-by-step, how to take a system approach to incorporating VSDs in your applications. If there’s a viable way for variable speed control to help generate savings on your pumping costs while improving system performance and reliability, this guide will show you how.
